A memoir can entertain us.

A great memoir can also make us examine our own lives.

Mark R. Dupra’s Cow Barns to Classrooms offers plenty of opportunities for reflection.

Here are seven lessons readers may take away.

1. Your First Career Does Not Define You

Dupra began professionally as a probation officer before moving into education.

His career demonstrates that a person’s first professional identity does not have to become a permanent one.

2. Experience Comes From Both Success and Failure

The memoir does not only celebrate accomplishments.

Dupra also reflects on decisions that he later questioned.

That may be more valuable.

Success tells us what worked.

Failure can tell us why.

3. Ask for Help

Growing up on a dairy farm encouraged Dupra’s independence.

But he eventually learned that seeking assistance when expertise is lacking is part of responsible decision-making.

That lesson applies to everyone.

4. Don’t Confuse Authority With Leadership

A title gives someone authority.

It does not automatically give that person trust, respect, or wisdom.

Leadership has to be demonstrated.

5. Change Can Be Necessary

Dupra’s career involved technology changes, staffing decisions, facilities projects, and institutional challenges.

His experiences show that organizations cannot remain healthy simply by repeating what they have always done.

6. Retirement Can Be a Beginning

After retiring, Dupra discovered that he missed writing.

He eventually returned to creative writing and continued educational work.

That is a powerful reminder that retirement can create room for new pursuits.

7. A Meaningful Life Does Not Need to Be Famous

Perhaps the most important lesson is Dupra’s belief that a productive life can simply be one that improves a few small pieces of the world.

That is a definition of success worth considering.

A memoir can entertain us. A great memoir can also make us examine our own lives. Mark R. Dupra’s Cow Barns to Classrooms offers plenty of opportunities for reflection. Here are seven lessons readers may take away. 1.
